For non-fiction texts such as academic papers and books or business documents, proofreading involves using a style manual to:

• Correct punctuation, grammar, spelling, and capitalization 
• Standardize font style and size and the use of bold, italics, and underline
• Ensure accurate formatting of all in-text citations and quotations

We specialize in proofreading using American Psychological Association (APA) style (7th edition) and the Chicago Manual of Style (17th edition). 

You can also provide guidelines to have your document edited using a version of Harvard style, a style guide issued by your university, or a corporate in-house style sheet (we can also help you create a style sheet for your business!).

Copyediting* includes all of the tasks outlined in the proofreading service as well as: 

• Identifying sentences that may be ambiguous or unclear
• Ensuring that the terminology is appropriate for the document’s tone and audience
• Identifying inconsistent or contradictory information within the body of the document (this does not include fact-checking, which is a separate service available on request)
• Ensuring that the text flows smoothly between paragraphs or sections

*Copyediting of business documents may involve light re-writing of your existing text to improve clarify but it does not include adding new information.

Layout formatting involves using a style manual (e.g. APA, Chicago Manual of Style, university guidelines, or in-house style guide) to:

• Create or format preliminary pages (cover page, table of contents, list of figures/tables, etc.)
• Standardize page numbers, margins, line and paragraph spacing, section numbering, and section heading styles
• Create/edit and ensure consistency in the titles and numbers of tables and figures
• Ensure consistent numbering and formatting of the appendices

Properly compiling a reference list is a time-consuming process that requires a keen eye for detail and accuracy.

Transcription involves the conversion of speech in an audiovisual file to written text. Audiovisual files can include recordings of research or business interviews, focus groups, speeches, and meetings.

How long does transcription take?  Typically, an experienced transcriptionist takes 3-4 hours to transcribe one hour of clear audio. This duration can drastically increase if the audio contains considerable background noise or distortion that affects the clarity of the speech.
